Clairemont residents divided over security robot causing issues

A new security initiative at a local apartment complex is raising concerns among residents. While designed to deter crime, some say it's causing issues.

SAN DIEGO — An autonomous robot is working to deter crime at an apartment complex in Clairemont, however some residents say this security guard robot is causing some issues.

"I said listen I need to move my car and he listened and he moved," said Graciela, she lives in the Stratton Apartment complex in Clairemont.

The robot is designed to enhance security with its 365-degree cameras, self driving technology and AI. Some residents say even with all this technology, the robot is causing issues.

"It be hitting cars and it's disrespectful and it talks to you. It will tell you to move after it hit your car," said Joe, he also lives in the complex.

Our crews saw a driver struggling to park as the robot blocked her parking spot.

"We have to push it out the way of the car to get into the parking spot. It will sit there and wait. It's Wally," Joe said.

A resident's video shows the robot going in front of moving vehicles and forcing drivers to hit the breaks.

"The robot can create an accident. There are kids too running everywhere," Graciela said.

We interviewed JDS Security Services when the robot began patrolling the apartments back in April. The goal was to deter crime.

"A lot of catalytic converters are being stolen. so the robot does have the infrared at night so it will monitor any heat signature around vehicles," said Danny Garcia, CEO of JDS Security Services.

CBS 8 checked in with JDS Security Services Thursday evening and asked if they've heard complaints about the robot or if it has had any issues. They say most residents like having the robot around and that it has helped to reduce crime significantly.

"I'm more worried about it running over my foot and not listening and just wandering I guess," Joe said.

Going forward residents are hopeful to see improvements.

"Thank you. Maybe we didn't know who to complain but with you guys you take this on air and maybe someone will pay attention and fix the robot," Graciela said.

The demand for these robots is growing nationwide. They're rolling out across California, New York City, Washington D.C. and Las Vegas.
