Residents affected by El Cajon fuel spill nearly a month later

Fuel flowed into the storm drains and residents say they could smell gas days after the Oct. 9 spill.

EL CAJON, Calif. — Cleanup is still underway after a fuel truck overturned nearly one month ago in El Cajon.

The city says the focus is now on removing soil under the road and the sidewalk where the gasoline spilled.

This fuel truck flipped over in the intersection of Fletcher Parkway and Navajo Road. Heartland Fire says it was carrying 8,800 gallons of gasoline.

"We didn't know what was going on until later on we looked it up," said David, he and his family live in a neighborhood near the spill.

Fuel flowed into the storm drains and residents say they could smell gas days after the Oct. 9 spill.

"It was weird I smelled more gas like the few days afterwards. I think it was when they were cleaning up the rain canals," he said.

Some homes in the area had to evacuated and others were advised to shelter in place. Traffic in the areas has also been affected and lanes have been closed as crews work to cleanup the gas.

"They'll block off that whole road and not really warn anybody so sometimes we need to pick them up or take them to school and then take a detour," he said.

The city says the EPA is directing the cleanup. Some residents are surprised to see crews still out working nearly one month later.

"It's surprising but we've never seen anything like it before so it's not like we know what to expect," he said.

The city says next the trucking company's contractor will begin fixing the street, sidewalks, traffic signals and landscaping at the intersection. CBS 8 didn't get a specific timeline of when work will be complete.
