SAN DIEGO — San Diego court officials issued a warning Thursday about a scam targeting people by phone. The San Diego Superior Court said scammers are spoofing caller ID with a court phone number.
Authorities said the South County Courthouse has received calls from members of the Hispanic community saying they received calls with an actual court number displayed on caller ID. It seems the scammers are using software to get the display to read with an official court phone number.

The callers allegedly tell the potential victims they have a pending case and must deposit money into a bank account to avoid having a warrant issued for their arrest.
The San Diego Superior Court reminded the public that it does not demand money over the phone to clear cases or dismiss warrants. It advised that anyone in doubt of the legitimacy of a call should hand up and call the court directly. Law enforcement should be contacted if a scammer gets aggressive on a call.
