Port of San Diego approves Coronado Bay Bridge lighting project

CORONADO, Calif. —

The Coronado Bridge is sure to light up the San Diego skyline. The Port of San Diego announced on Thursday that the California Coastal Commission has given the Port of San Diego the okay to temporarily install LED lights on four of the bridge’s mid-span piers. They’ll try it out between dusk and dawn during one-week period sometime in 2020.

On Oct. 16, the California Coastal Commission approved a Coastal Development Permit (CDP) allowing the Port to light up four over-water piers attached to the bridge.

Our vision for this project is to inspire and connect people to San Diego Bay through the fusion of art and technology,” said Commissioner Marshall Merrifield, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners in a press release. “We’ve achieved another important milestone in this project that, if ultimately approved, would transform the San Diego-Coronado Bridge into a signature, iconic artwork for our urban landscape.”

During that week next year, the lights should be visible throughout San Diego.
