El Cajon couple on cruise while home floods

Couple arrives home to find $200,000 in flood damage.

EL CAJON, Calif. — A couple's vacation took a turn when they learned flood waters had entered their home. Dave and Susan were celebrating their 49th wedding anniversary with a weeklong cruise.

"Water eventually flooded the entire house. Every single room," Dave said.

A neighbor called warning about last Monday's heavy rainfall. The couple decided to check on their house by looking at their security cameras. then started fearing for the worst.

They arrived back at their home in El Cajon Sunday and saw the damage for themselves.

"We're looking at around $200,000 and unfortunately we have water damage insurance that's only for plumbing and things of that nature but not flood insurance. We're really disappointed in that," he said.

About thirty years ago they experienced flooding in their backyard after water from the elementary school behind them flowed onto their property. They say the school took care of the issue. Now two sinkholes on the school property have them believing water came flowing from the school again.

"Water cascading from the school property down to our courtyard but there was nothing we could do," Dave said.

They're hopeful the school will work with them again this time around. A restoration company says the home needs a compete remodel to replace baseboards, cabinets, get all new carpet and tearing out the walls two to three feet up to make sure no water is left behind.
