SAN DIEGO — El Buque Escuela Velero Cuauhtémoc made a stop along the Port of San Diego as part of its 2024 tri-continental training cruise.
The vessel, known as The ARM School Tall Ship Cuauhtémoc, is visiting San Diego from May 16 through May 20 and is offering public tours free of charge.
“Once I saw in the news that this beautiful boat was going to be here I said I have to come and see it,” Claudia Montano said.
The ship has navigated oceans and seas around the world for more than four decades. For over 41 years, the tall ship has navigated the oceans and seas around the world, training more than 41 generations of officers. Claudia Montano is visiting San Diego from Orange County but it's not the first time she’s seeing the vessel.
“The first time I saw it in Tahiti, the second time in San Pedro in Los Angeles … third time here in San Diego,” Montano said.
People participating in the tours have the opportunity to speak with crew and sailor personnel to learn more about the vessel. Margarita Illanes bought a souvenir to take home, a little piece of Mexico.
In Spanish she told CBS 8 that she feels proud to be Mexican. Meanwhile Manuel Vasquez said it means a lot to him to see this Mexican Navy ship because it means its leaving a mark in other places.
“It's very elegant, it's gorgeous, it's like a historical piece,” Montano said.
After it visits San Diego, the vessel will set sail on May 21 toward Honolulu and continue its nautical journey to 13 ports from 10 countries, including Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, and Tahiti, officials said.
