New curfew expected at Pasatiempo Park in Del Cerro

Neighbors saw an increase in underage drinking and illicit activities at the park.

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego City Council is expected to approve a new curfew at a park in Del Cerro. This comes after neighbors saw an increase in underage drinking and illicit activities at the park.

Neighbors said cars lined up along Pasatiempo Park where they'd see underage kids drinking, doing drugs and leaving a whole lot of trash behind.

"This was really a spot for people to drink, smoke pot and do over things they shouldn't be doing," said Cindy who lives in the area.

Videos and photos neighbors shared with CBS 8 show crushed beer cans, trash, broken glass scattered around the park and rocks with graffiti.

"I mean I would have to pick up big empty bottles of alcohol. I mean there's a trashcan down there so I could throw things away but it was messy," she said.

Residents also had concerns about dangerous driving and people driving under the influence. Safety concerns prompted neighbors to band together.

The neighborhood watch group got a surveillance camera to better monitor the area and are working with the San Diego Police.

"It has really helped having the camera that has helped cut down on activity a lot," Cindy said.

On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council is expected to approve a curfew for the park. It will be enforced from April through October from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and November through March from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.

"I really hope it will help. Yeah, I hope it will help," she said.
