Dramatic crash on San Diego freeway caught on video

A 22-year-old driver lost control on State Route 163 and rolled over.

SAN DIEGO — Three people are recovering from a violent crash Wednesday on State Route 163. The accident was captured on video by another nearby driver.

A spokesperson for CHP told CBS 8 the 22-year-old driver of a 2024 Subaru was involved in a collision with a big rig, causing the Subaru to veer off the freeway into the ice plant on the side of the road.

That's where the video recorded by the other driver begins, with the Subaru plowing through the ice plant. Somehow, the male driver made it back onto the I-805 south freeway and then drives up the on-ramp of the 163 south in Linda Vista.

The CHP said a 17-year-old girl was also a passenger in the Subaru.

After that, the driver seemed to have difficulty controlling the vehicle, as it started to weave back and forth. Suddenly, the Subaru flies across several lanes and collides with a white Ford Eco Sport driven by a 70-year-old man, according to CHP.  The Subaru rolled over.

All three victims were transported to the hospital. The extent of their injuries was not released. CHP said alcohol and/or drugs are not a suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Officers ran the license of the driver, according to CHP radio traffic. He had a valid driver’s license, no prior criminal history, and so far no charges have been filed.

CBS 8 spoke to the family of the Subaru driver. They declined to release any information on the conditions of the driver or his teenage passenger. The family member indicated that they were going through a hard time, and that they had seen the video of the crash.

CHP posted the following news release:

"On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at approximately 3:18 p.m., a 22-year-old male from San Diego, CA, was driving a Subaru SUV on Interstate 805 (I-805) southbound, north of State Route163 (SR-163). As the driver of the Subaru transitioned onto SR-163 southbound, the Subaru veered across all lanes and struck a Ford Eco Sport driven by a 70-year-old male from San Diego, CA. The force of the crash caused the Subaru to overturn. The driver and passenger of the Subaru along with the driver of the Ford were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured. Alcohol/and or drugs are not a suspected factor in this crash. The cause and sequence of events are under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) San Diego Area.
