Driver in double-fatal San Diego Police crash identified as 16-year-old male

There are growing memorials for Officer Austin Machitar and the teenage driver at the crash site.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego County Medical Examiner's identified a driver involved in the Monday night collision that killed one police officer and severely injured another as 16-year-old Edgar Oviedo.

According to the Medical Examiner's office, Oviedo was driving a BMW sedan eastbound on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and laterally collided with an SDPD patrol unit that was heading northbound. The two cars crashed into each other at the road's intersection on Doliva Drive.

Thursday morning, workers took down two City of San Diego surveillance cameras at the intersection. Two members of the California Highway Patrol's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Teams (MAIT) told CBS 8 they were being taken down as part of the investigation and couldn't comment any further.

Oviedo's family members visited a memorial for him at the crash site. Several candles and flowers were laid in his honor.

"I'm sad," said his cousin, Irma Gonzalez. "This boy didn't deserve to die like this."

"We feel bad for the families too, the police families, yeah, because they're feeling the same, like us," she added.

Meanwhile, people in the community added flowers to a memorial for Officer Austin Machitar, which is also located at the crash site.

"I believe I had seen him a couple times," said Anita Andarus. She owns a business across the street. "When my children saw his picture [they said] 'Mama, believe he's our customer.'"

"He's in heaven, in a better place," she added.

Another woman laid roses down for Officer Machitar. She told CBS 8 she has kids his age and can't imagine what his family is going through.

Paramedics tried to save Oviedo's life while transporting him to the hospital, per the Medical Examiner's office. After arriving to Sharp Memorial Hospital, medical staff took over lifesaving measures.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving to Sharp.

The police officer driving the patrol unit was pronounced dead at the scene, the Medical Examiner's release says.

In a press conference on Tuesday, San Diego Police Department Chief Scott Wahl identified the two officers involved in the crash.

He said 30-year-old Austin Machitar was a five-and-a-half-year veteran of the force, who grew up in San Diego.

“He’s the kind of guy you wanted on your team,” Wahl said.

Wahl said he is survived by his sister and parents who live in San Diego.

“I can’t imagine what his parents are going through right now,” Wahl said.

Wahl said the focus of the San Diego Police Department is helping the family grieve and get through the process. The officer injured in Monday’s crash was identified as 27-year-old Zachary Martinez.

Wahl said Martinez has been a San Diego Police officer for a year and half, assigned to the department's Northern Division. Martinez was a trainee of Machitar in 2023 and would occasionally ride together as partners during patrol shifts.

Martinez is a Navy reservist from Texas who came to San Diego while serving in the Navy. “He was born and raised to serve,” Wahl said.

Wahl said Martinez sustained a long list of serious injuries and is fighting for his life.

“We’re very optimistic he’s going to be okay, but he has a very long road to go,” Wahl said.
