El Cajon Mayor believes suspect in officer-involved shooting outside police department is dead

The shooting occurred after a person tried to run over officers in front of the El Cajon police station with their vehicle.

EL CAJON, Calif. — El Cajon Police are investigating a shooting that involved officers and a person in a truck Wednesday afternoon just outside their police station at 100 Civic Center Way near El Cajon City Hall.

The shooting happened when an individual in what appears to be a black truck or SUV hit at least one officer who was standing outside near their police cruiser and then drove toward another officer. Multiple officers fired at the vehicle hitting the driver according to El Cajon Police Dept PIO Lt. Keith MacArthur.

The driver was transported to a nearby hospital. El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells said he believes the driver is dead.

The officer who was struck by the truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

There were several officers and city officials at the El Cajon Police Department for a retirement party. A ceremonial celebration was going to be held outside the station with the police cruisers when the shooting took place.
