A growing homeless encampment along San Diego's Logan Avenue has neighbors concerned

A homeless encampment along the freeway exit in Barrio Logan is one of the concerns brought up during Wednesday’s Community Planning Group meeting.

SAN DIEGO — More than a dozen people attended the Barrio Logan Community Planning Meeting at the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center Wednesday evening. During the meeting, people had the opportunity to speak during public comment on issues that matter to them.

“Mercedes,” who did not want to reveal her identity or be on camera, was one of the residents in attendance who brought up the encampment along Logan Avenue.

“We live in poverty here in the community and to have that type of encampment, its an eyesore,” Mercedes said.

Mercedes tells CBS 8 this encampment has anywhere from 45 to 50 people living there and says the number continues to grow by the day.

“There's lots of theft, I myself and my husband have to get up early in the morning and walk the block and go pick up our belongings because our belongings end up at 1790 Logan Avenue,” Mercedes said.

The encampment is at the intersection of Logan and Beardsley by the freeway overpass.

“There's lots of trash which the city does not pick up,” Mercedes said.

Meeting attendees also want something done about excess trash in the area. Maria Guerrero spoke in Spanish during public comment and said there's a lot of trash left behind in front of where she lives.

Meanwhile Mercedes tells CBS 8 the planning committee can voice their collective concerns, but it's up to San Diego leaders to act.

“We can speak up, the community and the planning group can speak up to try and get the local help but this has to come directly from the city,” Mercedes said.

The Barrio Logan Community Planning group will meet again July 17 for more information visit sandiego.gov.
