Eroding bluffs prompt urgent repairs in Sunset Cliffs

City crews worked to move a guardrail on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard inland due to the crumbling bluffs.

SAN DIEGO — City of San Diego crews continue to perform urgent repairs in Sunset Cliffs because of eroding bluffs.

A section of the cliffs along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard sparked safety concerns. It's an area busy with people enjoying the views near the cliff's edge.

"It was very rusted. It was very easy to slip through if someone went to close to it," said Tim Edling, a Sunset Cliffs resident.

He walks the area a few times a week and was happy to see the deteriorating guardrail gone and a new one built a few feet inland.

"There's a few bad areas. I know they've sectioned off parts where you can't walk along the coast anymore down further. There's some really bad hand rails that need to be replaced that are very sharp, rusty and dangerous," he said.

A longtime Sunset Cliffs resident, Corby, said he's watched the cliffs erode away over the years.

"Right behind me here yes it has been a long time coming. If you wanna take care of it you need to fill it in but I don't think they're going to do that. They're just keep moving in east with the road," he said.

The City of San Diego says it's working to implement Climate Resilient SD. It's a plan to respond and recover from climate change-related impacts including coastal erosion.
