SAN DIEGO — Three restaurants in San Diego County have been placed on Esquire Magazine’s 2023 list of best restaurants in the United States.

Hitokuchi in the Convoy District, Michelin-recommended Mabels Gone Fishing in North Park and Michelin-starred Valle in Oceanside all made Esquire’s Top 50 list of best new restaurants in America.

For Esquire Magazine’s forty-first edition of their best new restaurants list, the culinary and lifestyle team visited 200 restaurants across the country in search of the nation’s best new foodie destinations.

Esquire’s team of food writers narrowed the list down to 50 restaurants from New York City to San Diego.

Here's what the magazine said about San Diego County.

Mabel’s Gone Fishing

Located at 3770 30th St. San Diego, Ca 92104

"Take Iberian cuisine, give it a touch of the California coast, and casually wrap them up in a neighborhood bar and restaurant, and you’ve got Mabel’s," the magazine wrote.

Hitokuchi

Located at 4764 Convoy St Suite B, San Diego, CA 92111

"From the street, you might see the drive-through for a fast-food spot, but Hitokuchi is squeezed in the back. Pass through the heavy door and you’ll find some of the most exquisite cooking in San Diego’s Convoy District," the magazine wrote.

Valle

Located at 222 N Pacific St, Oceanside, CA 92054

"Valle is nothing like most Mexican restaurants you’ll find in this part of California. It takes a modernist yet still fun and soulful approach to the cuisine, specifically of the valle in its name, the Guadalupe Valley," the magazine writes.
