Farmers Insurance Open 2023 wraps up at Torrey Pines with Max Homa come from behind victory
Homa birdied the 18th hole to complete the tournament at 13-under-par 275. He earned $1.566 million for his sixth PGA Tour victory.
The PGA's 2023 Farmers Insurance Open teed off on Wednesday and for the second consecutive year, the tournament concluded on Saturday, one day earlier than usual.
The start was moved to Wednesday to avoid a conflict with Sunday's telecasts of the NFL conference championship games, American television's most-watched programming outside of Super Bowl Sunday.
Saturday | Day 4 The final day at Torrey Pines
Max Homa shot a 6-under-par 66 Saturday at Torrey Pines Golf Course's South Course to win the $8.7 million Farmers Insurance Open by two strokes over fellow American Keegan Bradley.
Homa entered the round among four golfers tied for fourth, five stokes behind leader Sam Ryder.
Ryder added a stroke to his lead by birdieing the par-4 first hole.
Playing one group behind Ryder, Homa moved within two strokes of the lead with birdies third, fifth and six holes while Ryder bogeyed the par-4 seventh. Ryder lost another stroke off his lead with a bogey on the par-3 eighth hole, his first back-to-back bogeys of the tournament.
Homa moved into a tie for the lead with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole while Ryder bogeyed the par-5 eighth hole.
The golfers remained tied after Ryder birdied the 10th hole and Homa the 11th.
Homa fell stroke behind Ryder when he bogeyed the par-4 14th hole.
Ryder dropped out of the lead for good when he double-bogeyed the par- 4 16th hole, his only double bogey of the tournament.
Homa kept a two-stroke lead over Bradley with birdie on the par-3 16, while Bradley, playing one group behind Homa, birdied the par-4 17th hole.
Bradley missed a chance to take a share of the lead on the 18th hole when his birdie putt from 24 feet, 5 inches stopped 17 inches past the hole.
Homa birdied the 18th hole to complete the tournament at 13-under-par 275. He earned $1.566 million for his sixth PGA Tour victory and second of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season.
Ryder finished his round at 3-over 75, dropping into a three way tie for fourth, at 9-under 279, four strokes off the lead.
Ryder called his round "a combination of bad shots and a couple bad breaks and not enough made putts.
"It's a very fine line between par and double bogey out here on this course," said Ryder, who was seeking his first victory in his 147 PGA Tour starts.
Jon Rahm, who began the round in second, two strokes off the lead in pursuit of being the first player to win in three consecutive tournaments on the PGA Tour since Dustin Johnson in 2017, shot a 2-over 74 to drop into a tie for seventh at 8-under 280, five strokes off the lead.
Friday | Day 3 Golfers that made the cut move to the south course
Jon Rahm made an impressive charge up the leaderboard on his favorite course with a 6-under 66 on Friday, which is now moving day at Torrey Pines, to pull within two shots of leader Sam Ryder after the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open.
Rahm, ranked No. 3 in the world, is 18 holes away from potentially winning his third straight start and taking over at No. 1 for the first time since March 20. He began Friday at 4 under and tied for 14th, and moved into sole possession of second place after an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole that capped his second stretch of playing four holes in 5 under in two days.
For the second consecutive year, the tournament will conclude on Saturday, one day earlier than usual. The start was moved to Wednesday to avoid a conflict with Sunday's telecasts of the NFL conference championship games, American television's most-watched programming outside of Super Bowl Sunday.

Thursday | Day 2 Big names on verge of missing cut
Jon Rahm is in danger of missing the cut in the $8.7 million Farmers Insurance Open Thursday after shooting a 1-over 73 on Torrey Pines Golf Course's South Course following victories in his past two starts on the PGA Tour.
The field will be reduced to the low 65 plus ties at the conclusion of Thursday's second round. Rahm is among 12 golfers in the 156-player field tied for 116th, nine strokes off the lead, shared by Americans Brent Grant and Sam Ryder and Englishman Aaron Rai at 8-under 64. There are 21 golfers tied for 50th at 2-under.
Since 1983 -- the earliest records are available -- two first-round leaders or co-leaders have gone on to win the Farmers Insurance Open, George Burns in 1987 and Patrick Reed in 2021.
The golfers who played the North Course Wednesday will play the South Course Thursday, while those who played the South Course will play the North Course. The final two rounds will be played on the South Course.
The scoring average on the North Course was 2.481 strokes lower than the South Course. The lowest scores on the South Course were 6-under-66s by Andrew Novak and Sam Stevens.
For the second consecutive year, the tournament began on a Wednesday, one day earlier than usual, and will conclude Saturday to avoid a conflict with Sunday's telecasts of the NFL conference championship games, American television's most-watched programming outside of Super Bowl Sunday.

The official tournament officially starts Wednesday morning on both the north and south courses.
What's new for 2023 New experiences and new days
Around 20,000 to 30,000 people are expected to be at the Torrey Pines Golf Course for the 2023 event, the first one of PGA's "West Coast Swing" that starts its season.
Organizers said even if you are not a golfer or don’t follow the sport, the Farmer's Insurance Open will still be a very fun experience.
156 golfers will compete in the tournament, including one of the hometown favorites, Xander Schauffele who went to Scripps Ranch High School and also San Diego State University.
Players will be splitting the first two rounds between the north and south course. Half of the golfers be eliminated after the first two days and the ones who make the cut will play the final rounds on the south course Friday and Saturday.
New experiences for attendees
"When you come out to be on the golf, there’s a lot of great areas on the course. There's the Dobell Tequila Lounge and the Tito’s lounge and new food items. We have new food partners: Dang Brother Pizza and Single Fin Poke. We will have other new foods we are trying out like Nashville hot chicken sandwiches, and different little things to see and do," said Marty Gorsich, CEO of the Century Club of San Diego.
Tickets for the event
Tickets are only sold online.
"There are general 'Grounds Tickets' and also some upgraded tickets like 'Ultra Pass' which comes with food and drinks and there are also private tents. As you talk about weekdays, you can park on the Del Mar Fairgrounds and take a shuttle or Uber. It will be very smooth for people to get in and out," said Gorsich.
"Another thing fans don’t want to miss is we have a big blue chair in the grove for photo opportunities. Also over by the 15th hole, we have a surfboard set up, you can't miss it, " said Alissa Kacar, social media host for the Farmer's Insurance Open.
"This is a great year to come out. It's going to surprise you if you’ve never seen it before. I talk to people who are not big golf fans. They may watch no golf at all, but they always talk about the great experience they have," said Gorsich.
New tournament days, no Sunday
The typical tournament days are sliding to start one day earlier in the week on a Wednesday rather than a Thursday in 2023 to avoid crossover on television against NFL playoff games. The first 2 rounds will be played on Wednesday and Thursday, then the final two days after the cut is made will be Friday and Saturday.
