Fascinator fascination as News 8's Rekha Muddaraj picks the perfect hat

When the royal couple arrives in Los Angeles Friday, News 8's Rekha Muddaraj will be there too. But we couldn't sent her all the way up there without first getting fashionably prepared.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - When the royal couple arrives in Los Angeles Friday, News 8's Rekha Muddaraj will be there too. But we couldn't sent her all the way up there without first getting fashionably prepared.

After their tour in Canada, the royal honeymooners will make their way to Southern California, and it's only appropriate that I dress, well, appropriately, and that means buying some new headgear.

There is no question the Duchess of Cambridge has a hat fetish. She took it to a new level during her visit to Canada wearing a bright red maple leaf design. But the look is catching on even on this side of the pond. So it seemed only right that before my royal trip I indulge in the regal trend.

Milliner to the stars Diana Cavagnaro has been making custom hats for 30 years, and has been a favorite of women attending Opening Day at the Del Mar Race Track.

"I have women come to me and they'll pick out the hat first and all the rest of it is accessorized with it," she said.

Diana's designs are priced between $300 and $600, and she makes each one by hand from scratch, and customizes them for each customer. She says lately it's the fascinator that's turning heads.

"Everyone wants the smaller hats for the opening day at the races," Diana said.

Clients like Lena Evans sing Diana's praises. In fact, Lena came by the trunk show to pick up her own custom creation. Now that Lena had her hat for the occasion, it was my turn. But hat after hat, I couldn't decide, so Diana had some advice.

"I tell people start off small... and then you'll want more," she said.
