FedEx truck robbery caught on camera in Chula Vista

Police are looking into a similar robbery that happened on the same day in San Diego to see if they are related.

SAN DIEGO — Police are searching for at least four suspects who robbed a FedEx truck in a brazen robbery on Thursday. It happened in the San Miguel Ranch neighborhood just after 5 p.m.

The robbery was caught on Ring camera. In the video, you can see the suspects pull up next to the FedEx truck. They then point what appears to be a weapon at the delivery driver and grab packages from inside the truck.

CBS 8 spoke with the owner of the FedEx delivery truck. He's a contractor with FedEx and did not want his last name used for fear of retaliation.

"They pushed him to the back. He’s taught to just back up and stay out of the way. It looked like they knew what they were doing, they were working as a team," Troy said.

The suspects were all wearing grey hoodies and masks. From a video inside the truck, which FedEx did not release to us, you can see the suspects form an assembly line handing packages to each other.

"You can hear them, hurry, hurry, grab this one, grab that one. And they were jumping in the driver's side and it was like clockwork, they knew what they were doing," said Troy.

Less than a minute later, the suspects drove away.

“They’re experienced, it looked like they knew what they're doing. They’re following people, following delivery truck companies," Troy said.

Neighbors said they noticed the blue BMW driving slowly through nearby streets.

One woman, who did not want to be identified said she was waiting for a delivery from FedEx when she heard a commotion outside.

“I yelled FedEx driver, FedEx driver are you ok, where are you?"

In the video, you can hear her call to the suspects.

“You guys are on camera. Just FYI, you are on camera," said the neighbor. “The FedEx driver said they panicked at that point and were yelling at each other to get in the car.”

The FedEx driver was not hurt. But police said crimes against delivery drivers have increased recently. Chula Vista Police are investigating whether or not another similar crime that took place in San Diego on the same day is related.

Police also want to remind people that thieves are targeting packages left by front doors so they tell people to be mindful of the time things are delivered or choose an alternate delivery location.

"I just wish we could catch them and at the end of the day and make an example of them and not give them a free pass," Troy said.
