Fire in Downtown San Diego near Comic-Con displaces 50, diverts traffic

San Diego Fire Rescue received the call about the fire on 939 Fourth Avenue around 7:27 p.m.

SAN DIEGO — A fire in the Gaslamp District broke out Friday night at a Brazilian rooftop steak house restaurant, officials say. The restaurant and the building next to it were evacuated. 

Roughly 1,200 San Diego Comic-Con event attendees were evacuated along with 50 people in residential units who are now displaced. No firefighters and no civilians were hurt in the blaze. 

Firefighters put out the flames quickly but there is extensive damage to the building. 

San Diego Fire Rescue received the call about the fire on 939 Fourth Avenue around 7:27 p.m. Fire officials say this was a three-alarm fire. The fire started on the first floor and made its way to the fourth floor and through the roof. 

A total of 109 personnel were assigned to combat the fire. Chula Vista, National City and Coronado assisted San Diego Fire with the call.

San Diego Police tell CBS 8 Broadway between Fourth Avenue and Sixth Avenue were closed to traffic. 

CBS 8 viewers sent in photos and video of the blaze. 

According to eye witnesses, first responders closed the intersection and are diverting traffic away from the scene. People in the downtown area should expect delays. 

Thousands of people are expected to be downtown throughout the weekend for San Diego Comic-Con.
