SAN DIEGO — There's a classic image of a firehouse dog, you know, that one where a dalmatian rides on the back of the firetruck? Well, it turns out that's not true.
"Well, policy is that there are no dogs in the station" said Battalion Chief Ed Kinnamon.
However, that's not stopping him from looking for a new dog.
"I grew up with animals. Ever since I was little, we've had dogs," said Kinnamon. "I had a chocolate lab that passed away from cancer four years ago."
As fate would have it, after responding to a dryer fire at the San Diego Humane Society, Kinnamon just so happened to walk into a room full of puppies.
"As soon as I walked in, two lab puppies came running up to me and I pet them," said Kinnamon. "I said 'I need to get me one of these' and she said 'are you interested?' and I said 'of course I am.'"
Just like that, Kinnamon adopted a ten-week-old lab mix. What did he name his new pup? Smokey.
"Anybody that's had a dog knows how fun it is to have a dog walk through a stream or when you're fishin'," said Kinnamon. "It's peaceful, but it's fun."
A firefighter and a dog named Smokey. It couldn't have worked out any better.
