Four injured in baseball bat assaults in Oceanside

The random attacks happened in the 1400 block of North Harbor Drive Saturday night.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A pair of masked assailants attacked four people with baseball bats, apparently at random, alongside Oceanside Harbor over the weekend, leaving them seriously injured, authorities said Monday.

Patrol officers responding to reports of an assault shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday found two of the victims suffering from head trauma in the 1400 block of North Harbor Drive, according to police.

Witnesses reported that the assailants appeared to be attacking random passersby, police said. The perpetrators also confronted a bystander and tried to steal her cellphone, which she had been using to record video of the violence.

A short time after receiving the assault report, the Oceanside Police Department said it received information about two people who were being treated for similar injuries at Tri-City Medical Center. Though unrelated to the other victims, they were assaulted in the same area and manner, apparently by the same attackers, police said.

All of the victims suffered significant injuries, including head lacerations, and one was left with a facial fracture, according to an OPD statement.

Investigators have generated possible suspect information and have located a vehicle believed to be linked to the assailants, police said.

Oceanside Police Department’s Crimes of Violence Unit is asking anyone with information regarding this incident to please contact Detective Sergeant Dave Estrada at (760) 435-4698 or email DEstrada@oceansideca.org

It happened in the 1400 block of North Harbor Drive Sunday night.
