Humane Society gives update on abandoned Golden Retrievers

There was a man caught on camera, carrying a crate – on two separate days, into the shelter who claimed the goldens he found were strays.

SAN DIEGO — Abandoned and possibly abused Golden Retrievers were dropped off at the San Diego Humane Society's Oceanside campus.

The search is on for their owner, as the shelter, which is already well over capacity, works to get them into a good home.

“Abusing an animal is a crime. This is a case where our Humane Law Enforcement felt we needed more information,” Nina Thompson said, from the San Diego Humane Society.

The two beautiful, male Golden Retrievers are believed to be just nine or ten months old and were left abandoned and possibly abused. They're currently under protective custody, as the case is under review.

“One of the dogs certainly had an injury that could have been intentional or accidental, and that's what we wanted to find out,” Thompson added.

There was a man caught on camera, carrying a crate – on two separate days, into the shelter, claiming the goldens he found were strays. He has been identified and is cooperating with the shelter's law enforcement.

“It is our responsibility to be the voice for these animals, they don't have a voice for themselves. If you have information, please contact us - you can be anonymous,” Thompson said.

The two dogs have microchips, originally registered with the American Kennel Club, but they were never updated with the new owner's information.

It is illegal to abandon your unwanted pet. To do it the right way, there's a step-by-step guide here.

“If someone is giving up their pet, we do ask them to make an appointment with us because we're so over capacity, that way we can plan, we also talk to the family about how they can re-home it on their own,” Thompson said.

They are seeing record numbers. Capacity for dogs alone is considered 358 – but there are currently close to 800 dogs - 2,000 animals total.

Following the July Fourth fireworks, 315 more were displaced and still only 51 have been reclaimed. We are all encouraged to adopt, or at least foster an animal.

“Anything you're looking for, you will find in our shelters - even if it's a French Bulldog,” Thompson added.

Friday through Sunday, adult dogs are only $10 to adopt.
