OCEANSIDE, Calif. — The celebrities were out for the 6th annual Brother Benno's Charity Golf Tournament. It was held at Goat Hill Park Golf Course where golfers gathered Wednesday to help raise funds for The Brother Benno Foundation. It's the largest event of the year.
Eleven-time surfing world champion Kelly Slater was one of the attendees.
"I think all of us are happy to be involved in what's going to be a fun day where everyone has a smile on their face but there's a serious message behind all this."
Slater is the co-founder of Outerknown and other businesses based here in San Diego. He recognizes bringing the community together can make a difference.
"I'm super happy to be involved, Brother Benno's does a great job. I learned a lot about them through my business partner Jeff. He lives in Carlsbad, our surfboards and clothing are there as well."
Paul McNamara is the Executive Director at The Brother Benno Foundation and keep everything moving in the right direction. Today's golf tournament makes that possible.
"We do soup kitchens, give out clothing, we have recovery programs for men and women, rental assistance, utility assistance," McNamara says.
Most of Brother Benno's work is in North County, but it wouldn't be possible without all of their volunteers.
"These are all people who just see there's a problem," McNamara says. "They roll up their selves and do something about it."
One of those people are Chuy Reyna who handles marketing for Firewire Surfboards based here in San Diego.
"This event is important to us, Brother Benno's has been a great leader when it comes to providing shelter, food to the ones that need help," Reyna says. "We offer an opportunity to give and were able to bring a lot of people and contribute to Brother Benno's."
And while today's event was to raise money for Brother Benno's... I had to ask Slater who's a scratch golfer.
"One hundred percent, yeah," he says. "We're here to win it. I brought in some ringers."
Wednesday's goal was to hit $300,000 and by the looks of the event they are right on target.
