SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Sharp Memorial Hospital celebrated its 60th anniversary with a special ceremony Thursday.
The hospital opened on April 2, 1955 as a single, nine-story tower in Kearny Mesa. Since then, it has grown to a multi-hospital medical campus known for its state-of-the art care.
Hospital volunteer Doris Heramb, 94, helped raise money for the new hospital before it even opened and she's still a volunteer today.
"I made many good friends, I feel it's given me good health, I keep active, I'm busy and get up and get out and do things and volunteer. It's the life and it's been a life for me,” Doris Heramb, Hospital Volunteer.
A time capsule buried when the hospital opened was on display at Thursday's ceremony. It included a pamphlet of hospital prices. In 1955, a stay in the maternity ward was $15 and a private room was $24.
