Home Start holds rally in East County for National Runaway and Homeless Youth Prevention Month

Home Start's goal with the rally Thursday is to bring awareness to the experiences of homeless youth in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO — Home Start, a local non-profit that provides tailored services to prevent child abuse and neglect, held a rally and resource fair in East County to raise awareness for children experiencing homelessness on Thursday.

The rally is calling attention to National Runaway and Homeless Youth Prevention Month. This is a county-wide event organized by Home Start.

"National Runaway and Homeless Youth Prevention Month is a dedicated time to raise awareness about the experiences of at-risk youth across the county and to advocate for the prevention of youth homelessness," Home Start said in a press release.

California is a state where homelessness has become prominent. A national survey on youth homelessness found that more than 1,500 kids and young adults are homeless in San Diego County.

CBS 8 had the chance to speak to the nonprofit before the walk. They said in El Cajon they have witnessed kids who are homeless and sometimes it's because of neglect.

The rally started at Home Start's Little House on Avocado Street. They will walk around downtown El Cajon and they will eventually end at Centennial Plaza.
