SAN DIEGO — Developers have announced plans to build two 40-story high rises in Downtown San Diego, with a 518-unit apartment building breaking ground in 2025 in Horton Plaza.
The Horton Plaza tower will include seven floors of parking and 12,600 square feet of retail on Broadway Circle, according to a release from Los Angeles-based Stockdale Capital Partners.
The other tower, on G Street, will have 332 units, for a total of 850 between the two buildings.
“Stockdale Capital Partners is creating a thriving, one-of-a-kind, mixed-use experience at Campus at Horton,” Stockdale managing partner Daniel Michaels said in a release. “With the addition of two new residential towers, we are deeply committed to the future activation of Campus at Horton and continue to make major investments in this one-of-a-kind asset for Downtown San Diego.”
Horton Plaza has long seen calls for renovations. The mall opened in 1985 to great fanfare, but in recent years has struggled to attract and retain a retail presence.
Several stores have left over the past several years as more people experiencing homelessness have congregated around the property and reported crime in the area has increased.
In 2019, Stockdale Capital planned to transform the space in Downtown San Diego into a tech and retail center called "The Campus at Horton." The firm expected that redevelopment to create between 3,000 and 4,000 jobs and generate more than $1.8 billion in annual revenue.
