The county is trying to return over $850K in unclaimed cash. Here's how to see if you're owed money.

It’s easy to search online if you’re owed money, but you have to act fast.

SAN DIEGO — If you know Haugh Granger, please tell him he’s owed $25,118.40 related to building permit refunds, and he’s not alone. The county's treasurer and tax collector has more than $850,000 of unclaimed cash that belongs to San Diegans and he wants to give it back.

Working For You, we walk you through the process of checking online to see if you're owed money and how to claim it.

How to search

  1. First, head to a computer and visit this website.
  2. Next, click on the “we may have your money tab”. Then scroll down to countywide unclaimed monies and click on the “search list” button.
  3. There you'll find a search box where you type in your name and immediately find out if you are owed money.
  4. You can also type in the names of family members and friends.

“We want to give the money back to the people that own it and that's what we're working hard to do,” said San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister. But time is running out. McAllister says you only have until Friday, October 4th to claim your cash.

Haugh isn’t the only one owed a lot money. Greentree and Associates is due more than $17,000. Peaceful Valley Ranch LLC, more than $6,000. And Monty McCullough can claim over $5,500. Those are the top four, but even the average amount would be a nice surprise.

“Right now, the average refund is $221,” McAllister told us.

If you are owed money, there will be a link right next to your name where you can download the claim form and it’s pretty straightforward to fill out. But note, your signature must be notarized if the claim is over $500.

So what happens if the money isn't claimed by October 4?

It goes to the county's general fund and that’s something McAllister doesn't want to see happen, which is why he reached out to CBS 8 to help get this information out.

“You guys play a big role by being out there to try and let people know this money needs to be put out,” he said.
