Hundreds of flights delayed, canceled at San Diego International Airport

Delta canceled more than 5,500 flights nationwide since the outage started early Friday morning, including at least 700 flights Monday.

SAN DIEGO — Frustration grew at the San Diego International Airport on Monday after more than 240 flights were delayed or canceled, according to Flight Aware. Most of the backup was from Delta flights.

"Just minutes before we were going to take off they canceled it and they had all the staff there ready to go," Kevin Bagley said.

Bagley was on his way to Detroit to see his grandchildren. He said the next flight out there wasn't until Thursday. He was one of many who waited hours in line to get a refund from Delta.

Some airlines, including Southwest and Alaska, do not use Crowdstrike, the provider of the cyber security software that triggered a Microsoft Windows outage. Those carriers saw relatively few cancellations.

Delta canceled more than 5,500 flights nationwide since the outage started early Friday morning, including at least 700 flights Monday.

29 Delta flights were delayed at the San Diego International Airport on Monday, that's nearly half of all Delta flights for the day. Another 17 flights were canceled.

"I would definitely say we’re stranded in San Diego," Jerry Marquez said.

Marquez said he had no option to rebook his flight and was stuck at the airport.

"Rent a hotel room, call our family in Riverside to come get us, I don't know," Marquez said.

Barbara Kirk's Delta flight was delayed four times before it was canceled. She was at the airport for more than eight hours waiting for her flight and trying to get her luggage back. She also dealt with rebooking and ultimately canceling a connecting flight. After waiting in line to rebook or get a refund for her flight, she gave up and decided to deal with it online later.

"I'm exhausted but I feel for the workers here, I know they’re doing the best they can, it’s just crazy," Kirk said.

Kirk even considered driving to her final destination in Kentucky.

"Because there’s no guarantees that we’ll get out of here in the next several days or even a week," she said.

An airport employee told CBS 8 the delayed and canceled flights are expected through the rest of the week.
