ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) - Don't look now, but there are only 81 more shopping days until Christmas. But the holiday season is well underway in Escondido. In this story, Larry Himmel explains.
There's a gift shop in Escondido,
Where seasons tend to blend
Into a string of holidays
To which there is no end.
Take a look at the calendar
It's not even Columbus Day.
Fall has barely just arrived,
Halloween still weeks away.
But by their own internal clock
Canterbury Gardens does abide.
So already from floor to ceiling
They're immersed in yuletide.
Wreaths are up, stockings hung
The trees all look fantastic.
Halls are decked, lists are checked
Just break out your plastic.
The electric trains are rolling
Through villages old and new.
Around each wintry scene,
Through the tunnels they choo-choo.
Now to some, the holiday hum-drum
Causes them to fear it.
But the folks who pass through here
Get right into the spirit.
Inside Canterbury Gardens
Memories of a simpler day.
With home and hearth all aglow,
You'll just be swept away.
For all who browse the crowded aisles
It's such a sight to see.
All these sights and smells arouse
A sense of childhood glee.
To celebrate Christmas in October
Some folks would call it treason
But maybe this year more than ever
We need a little holiday season.
Whatever are your own beliefs
One thing is understood
There's never been a better time
For peace and brotherhood.
And when it comes to buying gifts
We can all lower our debt ceiling
By just giving someone an ornament
That expresses our true feelings.
Let's hope this season gives us a reason
To put aside our angst.
And gather those who we love around
For our blessing to give thanks.
Now indeed it may sound trite
And not just quite PC
But may I be among the first
To wish season's greeting to all of thee.
