On the sunny side of the street

If you blinked, you might have missed Sidewalk Day.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – If you blinked, you might have missed Sidewalk Day.

"It's really an international movement. It's the final Thursday of every month, and it started 20 years ago in Europe," Stacey Pennington said.

And the idea caught on here.

"So once a year we should be able to take over public parking spaces to make them into linear parks, open space for the community," Stacey said.

Pull up a slab and enjoy city living hanging out in the park right on the front stoop.

"Pet friendly, family friendly," an organizer said.

While neighbors share coffee and sample food trucks. The folks from Stop, Shop and Roll set up a boutique against San Diego's architectural backdrop.

"The city has been on board with the movement. They're who allows us to do this without getting cited," an organizer said.

Maybe it's just a childhood throwback for all those years your mom would never let you play in the street, or just the way it unites and weaves the tribes as they truck homeward bound on a Friday afternoon. With its ventricle gardens and the awash in misty city dreams, these young San Diegans with their new hopes, new view, new visions, new desires.

It's Friday, and they're ready to take them to the sidewalks.
