OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Legendary Oceanside coach, teacher and mentor Herbert C. Meyer has died at 87, his family announced Tuesday.
Meyer died on April 8 while vacationing with his family in Spokane, Meyer's family confirmed.
Meyer retired in 2003 after more than 45 years of teaching, coaching and becoming widely known as one of the most respected interscholastic coaches in history. Meyer retired with more wins than any coach in the history of California high school football.
Meyer's coaching and teaching career spanned more than four decades, leaving a lasting impact on Oceanside High School and El Camino High School athletics.
In 2003, El Camino Football Stadium was renamed Herb Meyer Stadium to commemorate Meyer's retirement and legendary career.
Meyer's was inducted into 11 different Halls of Fame for his contributions to high school athletics, including the City of Oceanside Athletic Hall of Fame and C.I.F. Hall of Fame.
Meyer holds the honor as the first California coach ever inducted into the National High School Sports Hall of Fame, National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame and National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Hall of Fame.
During his tenure at Oceanside High School, Meyer coached football and baseball, leading the teams to 112 wins and two CIF championships over the course of 17 years.
While coaching at El Camino High School, Meyer became the school's first head football coach and Athletic Director.
A service will be held for Meyer at Mission San Luis Rey, donations may be made to the El Camino Parents Assisting Wildcat Sports. More details on the service will be announced, Meyer's family said.
