SAN DIEGO — Breaking into the music industry can be competitive and expensive - but there's a non-profit in Pacific Beach called "The Music Company" that is providing the equipment, space and support needed for recording artists to take their dreams to the next level.
"It's like a playground for musicians," said Jake Moats, who is a rapper/singer better known as 'Moats Art.'
He met Phillips, who goes by 'KayPressPlay' at a jam session at The Music Company.
"What they're doing for the community is so dope, it's so fire - so I fell into it, loved it," Phillips said. "It's more than just the space, it's the opportunity and the networking that makes it so special."
"I went from being in my bedroom to using the industry's best, highest-quality around. It brought my music from feeling amateurish to going all the way," Moats said.
The Executive Director Ted Pawela said, "That's what we're going for - create a space where people feel comfortable expressing their creativity."
The non-profit music studio aims to level the playing field for independent artists by making access more affordable to those pursuing their dreams.
"We want to help them get a platform, to create great content so they can book more shows, bigger shows - and ultimately attract a national or global audience," Pawela said.
The Music Company opened several studios in March of 2023, filled with state-of-the-art instruments, equipment and audio engineers. Rates are only around $20 an hour. That's about a quarter of what you'd pay at a commercial studio.
"This gives them an opportunity. They can come in and practice, get a set dialed in, before they go do a show," Pawela added.
So from a single podcast to a studio album, not only can you create content and practice your craft, but TMC also hosts community events and workshops that range from music production to business management.
"Someone could walk in here with nothing, just an idea and make music here," Pawela said.
The Music Company relies on volunteers and donations from people in our community, who simply appreciate the arts.
"I don't know anyone who hasn't benefitted from music, it helped them through a tough time, reminded them of good times - it has meaning and significance," Pawela added.
