First responders rescue Logan Heights worker caught in tortilla-making machine

The man’s arm got trapped inside the machine at around 10 a.m. on Friday at Sawaya Brothers Market.

SAN DIEGO — A man was rescued by San Diego firefighters after his arm got stuck in a tortilla-making machine in Logan Heights.

The man’s arm became trapped inside the machine at around 10 a.m. on Friday at Sawaya Brothers Market, located at 425 S. 30th Street, according to the San Diego Fire Department.

When first responders arrived at the market, the man’s entire arm became stuck in the machine, all the way up to his shoulder. Crews were able to disassemble the machine enough to bring the man to the ground and disperse his body weight, Battalion Chief Joshua Latinsky said.

Crews were able to take apart most of the machine. However, the man was transported to UCSD Hospital with a large portion of the machine still attached to his body.

Latinsky said the man was in severe pain but his vital signs were stable. CAL Osha was contacted and was expected to arrive at the market later on Friday, Latinsky said.
