Man complaining of heat exhaustion dies on Lakeside hiking trail

A man in his 20's was pronounced dead after complaints of being hot, tired, and thirsty while hiking El Capitan Trail in Lakeside.

LAKESIDE, Calif. — A man who told the group of hikers he was with Sunday night on El Capitan Hiking Trail that he was hot, tired, and thirsty, later died following symptoms of heat exhaustion.

The county identified the man as Sergio de Jesus Santiago Sufy.

Several fire agencies from Barona, Lakeside, Santee, and Cal Fire responded to the 13000 block of Blue Sky Ranch Road in Lakeside around 6:45 p.m. to reports of a medical emergency.

Dispatchers were told Sufy who appeared in his 20s complained to the group of hikers he was with that he was hot, tired, and thirsty, according to Lakeside Fire Protection District.

Lakeside Fire Department told CBS 8 that members of the group immediately began to scramble for water and called 9-1-1.

A rescue helicopter was initially dispatched to the scene but was canceled shortly after, according to Brent Pascua, a Public Information Officer with Cal Fire San Diego.

First responders arrived on the scene and discovered Sufy in "CPR status, pulseless, and not breathing," Lakeside Fire told CBS 8.

Firefighters immediately began life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead on the scene around 7:10 p.m.

Lakeside Fire Protection District officials said it's important to note even though weather conditions could be cloudy and not appear hot, hikers should be prepared with plenty of water.

Heat exhaustion symptoms include dizziness, excessive sweating, cool or clammy pale skin, possible nausea or vomiting.

Heat stroke symptoms include severe headache, confusion, a change in behavior, skin will feel hot to the touch but the body will stop sweating.

If you or someone exhibits these symptoms, drink water immediately but do not chug it, get them into a cool area, and put ice packs on arm pits, and sometimes behind the neck.
