SAN DIEGO — A woman was killed late Wednesday night after the driver of the Slingshot motorcycle she was in hit a ditch and crashed in Downtown San Diego.
San Diego police were called to the 300 block of 16th Street around 10:54 p.m. following reports of a crash.
When officers arrived, they found a 2021 Polaris Slingshot mangled on the sidewalk near a tree.
Witnesses told 1904 News that the slingshot was heading southbound on 16th Street at a high rate of speed before it veered toward the sidewalk, striking a parked vehicle, then slamming into a building's gas line before the motorcycle burst into flames.
San Diego police said the Slingshot was driven by a 32-year-old man who only sustained internal bleeding to his pelvis due to the crash.
The passenger, who witnesses said was an unidentifiable woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.
San Diego police could not confirm the identity of the woman killed in the crash.
"The Slingshot is federally classified as a three-wheeled motorcycle. Most states classify it as an Autocycle, which means that only a valid driver's license is needed to drive the vehicle," Polaris stated on their website.
Anyone with information related to the crash was asked to call San Diego police or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
