'Alright, alright, alright' | Matthew McConaughey, family visits San Diego

The movie star was in San Diego while his son was filming his movie debut.

SAN DIEGO — The rumors are true. Matthew McConaughey was spotted around San Diego. It's rumored he was in San Diego helping his son Levi for his movie debut in Way of the Warrior Kid.

While in San Diego, he trained with Tennis Director Joel Myers about a week and a half ago at the Coronado Tennis Center.

"We ended up deciding to hit for about two hours, and that turned into about five more sessions of hitting with him," Myers said.

Myers said McConaughey was an impressive tennis player.

"He just didn't take a break, like nobody plays for two or two and a half hours, that's so unusual," Myers said. "People take breaks, they take a rest, but he said that there's nothing more he would rather do than play tennis."

He also played with McConaughey's 16-year-old son, Levi. He said Levi has been playing tennis for about seven months.

The movie star was in San Diego while his son was filming his movie debut.

"Levi is a great kid and real athlete," he said. "I think his movie debut is what he was here filming, so as soon as they got off set I'm sure they were headed over here to play tennis at Coronado."

While Myers got to see the McConaugheys in action on the court, he didn't hear much about the movie being filmed.

CBS 8 headed to Pop Pie Co. and Stella Jean's Ice Cream in Pacific Beach because videos circulating social media showed them filming there. Employees Kalei and Abagail saw the action up close about two weeks ago.

"There was a huge crowd, lots of extras, lots of people directing people," Abagail said. "And then once you get around the shop and look back into the parking lot area, it was just filled with trailers and hundreds of people, it was really crazy."

Big stars including Chris Pratt and Linda Cardellini were inside the Pacific Beach spot for about five days filming. Cardellini even wore one of the Stella Jean's Ice Cream aprons.

"I got to make the waffle cones that they were handing out and that are shown in the back scene, I had to make like 50-plus of them," she said.

Kalei is a shift lead and opened and closed the shop each day for them to film. She said they rearranged the interior slightly for the movie.

"They didn't completely change everything, but they got to make it more of the movie, more immersive," she said. "They kept the name, but they added more toppings and cool little colors on the outside wall that you might have seen that we didn't have before."

She said McConaughey was only there for the day his son was filming. She didn't get a picture with him, but did have an encounter.

"Matthew McConaughey was parked right in front of my car," Kalei said. "All of a sudden, I saw Matthew walk right in front of me and then get in the car right in front of me, and I just was trying to act really cool."

It's rumored the movie will be released next year, but a date has not yet been announced. And, it's possible McConaughey will be back in San Diego.

"He said he might be back, so we may see him here at the tennis center again," Myers said.
