Mexican Tall Ship arrives in San Diego, here's how to see it for free this weekend

The ship known as the Cuauhtémoc, is visiting San Diego from May 16 through May 20 and you can see it for free this weekend.

SAN DIEGO —  A Mexican Navy ship sailed into San Diego with hundreds of crew and sailor personnel as part of the 2024 Tricontinental Training Cruise.

The vessel, known as The ARM School Tall Ship Cuauhtémoc, is visiting San Diego from May 16 through May 20 and is offering public tours free of charge. 

Hours

  • May 16: Open until 5 p.m.
  • May 17- May 20: Open from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
  • The Naval ship is docked at the B Street Pier next to the cruise terminal at the Port of San Diego.

The navy ship arrived Thursday morning and was welcomed to San Diego by the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego along with naval, civil and diplomatic authorities. 

A mariachi band and students from St. Rose of Lima Elementary waiving Mexican flags welcomed the vessel and its crew to San Diego. 

The ship has navigated oceans and seas around the world for more than four decades. For over 41 years, the tall ship has navigated the oceans and seas around the world, training more than 41 generations of officers.

Mexican officials said the ship, “has carried a message of peace and goodwill, having visited more than 228 ports in 73 countries in its history. She encouraged the sailors to carry Mexico in their hearts and wished them “calm seas” during the 222 days of their journey through three continents.”

After it visits San Diego, the vessel will set sail on May 21 toward Honolulu and continue its nautical journey to 13 ports from 10 countries, including Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, and Tahiti, officials said.
