CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The organization "We All We Got SD" and a local church in Chula Vista have partnered up to create a migrant women’s shelter.
The facility will provide women and their children with food, clothes and a warm place to spend the night.
“For people to feel like human, like a person and someone is there to support that journey,” "We All We Got SD" volunteer Denise Marquez said.
Volunteers have asked to keep the location of the church private for migrants' safety.
Priest Rigoberto Olivares told CBS 8 they are only receiving 20 people since it's all donation based. Everything provided to migrants is given by the community.
“They all want to seek safety, they all want some kind of freedom, and we are trying to do the best way we can, the most legal way we can to have them, you know, feel like they didn't come here for nothing,” "We All We Got SD" Donations Coordinator & Transportation Volunteer Sharon Swatowski said.
Since the migrant welcome center closed in March, migrants are getting dropped off at San Diego transit stations by border patrol. Many of them end up at the San Diego airport trying to get to their destinations. That's where the organization "We all we got SD" has stepped in to help.
“We're just always on the ground trying to find a place for someone and then also helping them with buying tickets, helping them just navigate the airport,” Swatowski said.
Volunteers will be picking up migrant women and their children in the evenings from the airport and will be able to check-in at the shelter at about 8 p.m. at night. In the morning they will be served breakfast and will have to leave the shelter and return back at night.
