Boaters hit the newly reopened Miramar Reservoir as heat wave scorches San Diego

Boat access has been closed since Sept. for the installation of a new underwater pipeline, which is part of the city's Pure Water Program.

SAN DIEGO — The people out at the Miramar Reservoir said there is no better way to spend your Saturday than on a boat, but they haven't been able to do that in a while. CBS 8 spoke with a couple boaters who were more than excited to get back on the water.

The reservoir open is open for water activities again after is was closed in September for the installation of a new underwater pipeline, which is part of the City of San Diego's Pure Water Program.

"I think its been closed that long maybe even a little bit longer, its been quite some time, at least a year, maybe even longer than that," said Josh Gordon who was out on the water fishing on Saturday.

"I have a floating tube out here today, not quite as advanced as everything else out here, but just like everyone else, excited to get out here," said Gordon.

He said it was hard to enjoy fishing from the shore with the ongoing construction.

"With it being closed for boat access, kayak access, it was hard to fish the lake the way I like to fish it," said Gordon.

CBS 8 also spoke to Garrett Peterson, a regular at the reservoir, and he agrees.

"The fish like to hang out in the middle and they like to chase the bait around and a lot of times from the shore you can't reach it and this place is very limited on shore fishing," said Peterson

The pure water project is the city's phased multi-year program that will provide almost half of the city's water supply locally by 2035.

With the completion of the construction at the reservoir, the first phase is now over halfway done. When it's finished it will produce 30 million gallons a day of purified water. For now the residents are excited boat access is reopened.

"I'm just glad that this place is back open for boating again, it's close to home and a lot of people missed out for sure, for a while, so, we'll be back out here more often," said Peterson.
