Consumers expected to spend a record $12.2 billion on Halloween this year

Popular costumes include Barbie, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.

SAN DIEGO — Halloween is less than a week away, and experts said the holiday will be bigger than ever in 2023.

According to the National Retail Federation, consumers will spend a record $12.2 billion on costumes, candy and other items, exceeding last year's record of $10.6 billion.

"During the month of October, we're here seven days a week," said Joelle Martenson, who co-owns Gypsy Treasure inside Grossmont Center.

The store sells and rents costumes year-round.

Martenson says when it comes to trending costumes, there are two in particular that customers have been asking for the most.

“Barbie pink everything. We have pink boas, pink dresses, all the pink makeup, that sort of stuff. And then Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce," said Martenson.

Martenson says horror movie characters come in at a close second.

But, if you ask Google the most searched Halloween costumes in 2023 behind Barbie:

  • Princess
  • Spider-man
  • Witch
  • Fairy

"The older they get, the more exciting it gets," said one dad shopping at Gypsy Treasure with his three-year-old twins.

Another shopper said, "I think more people are gonna be out this year without the pandemic and the scare of being around a lot of people."
