MTS and NCTD offer free public transportation for 'California Clean Air Day'

'Free Ride Day' will be valid for trolleys, buses, Coaster, and Sprinter on Wednesday.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and North County Transit District (NCTD) will hold Free Ride Day on Wednesday.

Free Ride Day is sponsored by Mission Federal Credit Union, and is part of California Clean Air Day, which encourages the state’s residents to reduce carbon emissions and improve the region’s air quality.

Free Ride Day will be valid on all MTS and NCTD fixed-routes services. That includes buses, trolleys, SPRINTER and COASTER.

NCTD LIFT and Amtrak Rail 2 Rail trains are not part of the promotion.

Free Ride Day is being held in conjunction with National Rideshare Week. Until Oct. 5, transportation organizations here and around the country will celebrate the many benefits of commuter alternatives.

“Whether you choose transit to reduce your carbon footprint or to reduce the bill at the gas pump, I invite you to explore what MTS and NCTD have to offer this Free Ride Day,” said Stephen Whitburn, MTS Board Chair and San Diego City Councilmember, District 3. “MTS is at the forefront of zero emission technology on our bus and light rail systems. We want to continue doing our part to reduce emissions and encourage San Diegans to participate in the statewide efforts to advocate for cleaner air.”

According to MTS, participants who choose transit on Free Ride Day are encouraged to RSVP through the MTS Facebook page event, or online at the Free Ride Day webpage.

MTS and NCTD will also hold pop-up events at major transit centers on Oct. 2 from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., to show appreciation to riders who choose to commute by transit.  Riders can stop by for transit information and promotional items.
