National City proposes $100K budget for each district

The city is currently finalizing its budget, but has proposed a district budget that could give $100,000 to each district.

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — The City Council in National City is split on how much money to allocate for the issues happening in all four districts. This week some council members proposed a $100,000 annual budget for each district.

“So what that $100,000 budget is so we have enough to pay for a full-time person’s benefits and full-time salary and make sure it's something livable. And also that we have a little extra for events,” said Councilmember Marcus Bush.

The city is currently transitioning into district voting, but they are also finalizing next year's fiscal budget.

Bush says the district budget is all about equity.

Mayor Ron Morrison holds the only full-time position on the council and receives an annual budget of $131,000, which covers benefits and an assistant.

While councilmembers share an assistant and historically have never had a budget.

“All we are asking for is what he’s getting so we can work as a team and really address the city’s issues,” said Bush.

“This is a city budget you don't need a district,” said Ron Morrison.

Morrison disagrees and says this isn't serving the community.

“This is just right for abuse, it's just right for a waste of money," he said.

Meanwhile, Bush says approving it could help address issues happening in his district.

He adds that District 4 needs to repave its streets and replace street signs. There are also other issues.

“Like homelessness, housing the homeless is a real issue,” said Bush.

Formal guidelines for spending have yet to be set. The city budget will be voted on at the City Council meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20.
