Road conditions continue to worsen throughout City of San Diego, new survey finds

In 2023, the city re-surfaced more than 250 miles of roadways and filled over 61,000 potholes: almost double the number compared to the previous year.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego city leaders will unveil its new long-term strategy for repairing local roadways Thursday morning.

This comes as a new city-wide survey finds that the condition of many San Diego streets is deteriorating. This new survey finds that the overall "pavement rating" for San Diego streets has dropped from a "satisfactory" rating back in 2016 down to only "fair."

But the city says it has a plan to turn that around.

In Mira Mesa, for example, Gold Coast Drive not only gets a "failing" grade in this new survey. Neighbors like Jimmy Carambas who have lived in the area since 1989 agree.

"I know this road and it is bad," Carambas told CBS 8. "As you can see there are potholes everywhere."

Potholes can wreak havoc on the cars driving down that road and others like it.

"They're awful, said one driver. "I think they need more attention. I mean, we pay enough taxes for the streets to not be fixed?"

One Clairemont resident said he believes certain San Diego streets do get attention, depending on the zip code.

"La Jolla, they seem to be doing pretty good, but you get areas like Clairemont, Linda Vista, Mira Mesa and they seem to be lacking in any attention on the roads," he said.

This survey finds that District 6, which includes Mira Mesa and Kearny Mesa, scored a 62 or "fair" in terms of pavement condition, while Council District 1, which includes La Jolla, did not score much higher, with a 65.

At last week's State of the City, Mayor Todd Gloria highlighted the work that has been completed in 2023, including re-paving more than 250 miles of roads, and filling over 61,000 potholes - almost double the number compared to the previous year.

"We added $40 million to our standard street improvement budget to fix San Diego's most heavily used thoroughfares in every city council district," Gloria said last Wednesday.

A record $140 million has been dedicated to fixing city streets in the 2024 budget, according to the city.
