Man shot by police outside of San Diego Harbor Police Headquarters

A 29-year-old man is in critical condition after a shooting involving Harbor Police, according to SDPD.

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that left a man in critical condition, according to police.

SDPD says the shooting happened at around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Captain Rich Freedman from the SDPD homicide unit says a 29-year-old man was shot by police after presenting a weapon.

SDPD says the man walked into police headquarters and used a call box located inside police headquarters to request for citizen assistance.

The man walked back to his grey Honda Civic. When Harbor Police officers approached the man, police say he presented a weapon. 

Police responded by firing at the man, shooting him. A total of three officers were involved in the incident. It's unknown how many rounds were fired. According to police, no officers were hit by bullets or injured.

Police have not yet identified the man shot by police or the three officers involved in the shooting.

The man was taken into custody and police began providing medical aid. The man was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition, according to SDPD.

"We're still trying to determine what brought him to Harbor Police," said Freedman.

Authorities say the SDPD homicide unit will lead the investigation and forward to the San Diego district attorneys office. Freedman said the FBI and U.S. Attorneys office will also be monitoring the investigation.

Freedman said investigators are looking at surveillance footage and officer worn body camera footage.
