CHULA VISTA, Calif. — One person was killed and two others were seriously injured Friday in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 805 near Telegraph Canyon Road.
The crash happened at 6:45 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the I-805.
"Upon CHP officers arrival, we located one deceased party, there were two other individuals who had major injuries that were transported to Sharp Memorial," said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Daniel Ralph.
"I have heard that Good Samaritans showed up on scene and pulled the deceased party from the car," he added.
He said Good Samaritans also pulled a second victim from the vehicle.
According to investigators, the driver, a 24-year-old man from Oakland, veered off the freeway and slammed into the concrete base of the H Street/E Street & Bonita Road Exit sign.
A 23-year-old male passenger from Newark, California died in the crash.
A second passenger, a 50-year-old male, survived. Both he and the driver were rushed to the hospital where they underwent surgery.
CBS 8 has learned that the white Toyota Camry they were in is a rental car. The car is registered to a company called Midway HFCA LLC.
Sgt. Ralph said all three people appeared to have been wearing seatbelts. Friday afternoon investigators revealed neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be factors in this crash.
The CHP shut down two lanes of the 805 freeway for about two hours.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The CHP is urging anyone who witnessed the crash to contact their office.
