Otay Mesa fire burns 137 acres, 80% contained

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif — A vegetation fire near Otay Truck Trail in Otay Mesa has spread to 137 acres, according to CAL FIRE. Fire fighters worked through the night to combat the blaze. As of 6:50 p.m. Sunday, the fire was 80% contained. 

The fire started just before 3:15 p.m. Saturday and was initially four acres with a critical spread, officials said on Twitter. 

Within the hour, the #Border58Fire spread significantly over what fire officials call "steep and rugged terrain." Firefighters from Cal Fire and San Diego Fire-Rescue are working to extinguish the flames. 150 personnel, 6 helicopters, 13 engines and 4 water tenders are assigned to the fire. 

Crews will remain through Sunday to strengthen control lines and extinguish hot spots, officials said on Twitter. Officials also advised people to use caution in the area around Otay Truck Trail because of fire equipment on the roadway. 

According to San Diego Sheriff's, no structures are at risk at the time being. 

No cause has been reported at this time.
