SAN DIEGO — It’s Fleet Week San Diego!
Fleet Week is a time for the Navy, local Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard to showcase the work they do to protect our nation every day. While the public is invited to attend Friday through Monday, Thursday's event focused on students.
Members of the military offered students interested in STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—a chance to explore the careers these skills can lead to within the armed forces.
"They showed us these night vision goggles and how they can navigate in the dark," said Kayla Buxton, a freshman at Olympian High School in Chula Vista.
Students had the opportunity to tour a mobile military surgical hospital and watch a Coast Guard rescue demonstration on the water.
"Seeing these kids and remembering where I was at their age is very special. I love answering their questions, taking pictures, and fostering that curiosity," said Navy Lt. Matthew Coffin. "I hope you take the time to come out over the long weekend and learn something new."
Before Fleet Week opens to the public on Friday, thousands of local students were given a preview of potential career paths that involve using science, technology, engineering, and math to serve our country.
"Right now, I’m taking Biology. I know there are pharmacy jobs in the military, so I might be interested in that," Buxton added.
Fleet Week also gives these students a chance to gain a deeper respect and appreciation for our sea services.
Starting Friday at noon, Fleet Week will be open to the public for free, running through Veterans Day on Monday.
