SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A day before Veterans Day, a Navy veteran received a gift that will help change his life for the better.
San Diego-based nonprofit Shelter to Soldier presented Vic Martin with Kira, a rescued service dog. Martin suffered a brain injury and has been struggling with memory loss, anxiety and depression.
Kira will help Martin continue his recovery in a place she may not have gone to otherwise -- a permanent home.
"This is one of those organizations that, whether you're a veterans' supporter or a shelter supporter, this is one of those organizations that can help both of those and really has an amazing opportunity to help a ton of veterans," Martin said.
Shelter to Soldier trains rescued shelter dogs to become certified psychiatric service companions for combat veterans suffering from PTSD.
