Spirit of '45 honors San Diego's WWII veterans

Nearly 79 years after World War II ended, veterans are still honored for their service. Sunday's VJ Day celebration in San Diego was the biggest yet.

SAN DIEGO — As the world prepares to remember the end of World War II, the nation is stopping to honor veterans who served in the second World War.

Around 400 people gathered to celebrate the nationally-recognized and Congress mandated event that happens every year on the second Sunday of August. The Spirit of '45 event is meant to celebrate VJ Day, or Victory from Japan Day.

"Whether you were in the air, on the sea, on the ground, we thank you for all you did to fend our freedoms and help keep us free," Honor Flight Spokesperson Holly Shaffner said.

44 WWII veterans attended the Spirit of '45 event in San Diego. It's said to be the largest in the country.

The oldest veteran was 108 years old.

The rest of the honored attendees ranged from 94 to 104 years old.

WWII veteran Max Gurney said turning 100 meant he could hit the restart button.

"I like to say I’m three and a half years old, because the first 100 years are gone, I’m starting from zero," Max Gurney said.

Alongside WWII veterans, about 180 Korean and Vietnam War veterans were recognized for their service. Veterans and their families reconnected with familiar faces and shared stories never heard before.
