SAN DIEGO — A 67-year-old pedestrian was severely injured Monday afternoon when a car veered out of a traffic lane and struck him in a busy commercial district in Pacific Beach, authorities reported.

The driver of the silver BMW lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons in the 4600 block of Mission Bay Drive about 1:15 p.m., according to San Diego police.

The car drifted to the left into a center median, where it hit the man, Officer Dino Delimitros said. The BMW then continued on to the north past Garnet Avenue, collided with an oncoming Ford Fusion and overturned, coming to rest on its roof.

Medics took the pedestrian to a hospital for treatment of life-threatening head trauma, a broken pelvis and other internal injuries. The driver of the Ford Fusion, a 31-year-old woman, was evaluated for complaints of pain. The 40-year-old driver of the BMW was unhurt, Delimitros said.

To allow for investigation and cleanup, police blocked off Garnet Avenue between Bond Street and Morena Boulevard, along with all but one lane of Mission Bay Drive between Damon and Garnet avenues. The closures were expected to remain in effect into the early evening.
