San Diego County launches interactive map, website to find affordable housing

While supply still outweighs demand in the area, options continue to be limited.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego County wants to help you find affordable housing to rent. That's why it has released an interactive map and website listing all of your options in one spot.

But your options may be limited.

Demand for affordable housing in San Diego County continues to outweigh the supply. That's why the county also says it's putting millions of dollars into affordable housing to hopefully have more options.

However, some San Diegans say affordability is still out of reach.

The County Restricted Affordable Housing Map is part of The County's Housing Blueprint. It's aimed at tackling the regional housing crisis.

Here's what info the map shows:

  • Where the potential home is and pictures.
  • The number of units on the property and if it's an apartment complex.
  • The number of bedrooms in a unit.
  •  Income limits and contact information for the seller.

But when CBS 8 went to find out what affordable options might be available our search came up short.

We adjusted the filters for a one-bedroom for someone making about $70,000 a year. That’s the average salary in San Diego, according to Zip Recruiter.

Only a handful of options come up with this search and you may not qualify if you are not 55 years old yet.

Sheri Jones is a real estate broker who says this online tool from the county might be helpful, but it won’t solve the problem of bridging the affordability gap.

"That’s why a lot of people are getting frustrated,” Jones shared. “They're asking where the affordable housing is. It exists. But you may not be able to qualify for it because you make too much money."

"So if you make above that AMI (area median income) chart, you're not considered within the boundaries of the AMI. Which means you're not considered eligible for affordable housing at that point," Jones explained.

The site lists existing homes and includes future options because the wait list for affordable housing has been 10 years long for some San Diego renters.

Since 2017, San Diego County has said it's invested $310 million into affordable housing, opening more than 2,100 units, with 3,300 more in the works.

Meanwhile, San Diegans waiting for affordable housing, might get lucky. For most, their wait continues.
