'Unacceptable' | Parents concerned over construction at Pablo Tac Elementary in Oceanside

The elementary school has active construction and heavy equipment on site.

SAN DIEGO — Parents in Oceanside are speaking out over safety concerns with ongoing construction at Pablo Tac Elementary School.

They said a construction site is no place for children and voiced their concerns to the Oceanside Unified School District Board Tuesday.

"I don't understand why the district is okay with sending 300 plus students to an active job site rather than a school," said a mother during the board meeting.

Parent's provided us with photos and videos. They said the conditions aren't acceptable for their children who returned to school Aug. 15.

"We watched a child run in front of an earth mover at dismissal the first day and you wonder why parents and grandparents feel the way they do," said a grandmother.

Madison Williams is a mother of two who voiced her concerns. She says there are air conditioning issues and that the school didn't provide students shade during recess. She's also found many of the portable restrooms don't lock and are not adequate for children.

"I'm so mad at you guys. It's unacceptable that parents had to step up and highlight the basic needs like shade and water and lack of a PA system which played pretty crucial later with an emergency," she said.

Just a few days after the start of the school year, a delivery truck sparked a fire near the school when it hit a powerline. Parents say evacuating students was difficult and now they are taking their safety concerns to the board, and are asking them to take action.

"I'm definitely on Pablo Tac's team and that's why I'm here and just hopefully they're gonna realize they can't keep doing this to our schools and our children," Williams said.
